The 8th International Roots Festival
The 8th International Roots Festival was Victorious! Choice Enterprises had the opportunity to be one of the National Promoters of the Festival. This was our first International client and we congratulate the Department of State For Tourism and Culture and the Roots Committee on this year's success. Secretary of State Susan Waffa-Ogoo welcomes all of the Brother & Sisters from Africa, America, Jamaica and the UK who have travel to help make the International Roots Festival a success. The International Roots Festival is sponsored by The Department of State For Tourism and Culture in the beautiful capital Banjul - The Gambia, Africa. This year's theme was "Celebrating Unity Through Culture" from June 3rd - 10th 2006.
The Welcome Reception was held at the magnificent Makasutu. A breath taking resort and Culture Forest adjacent to the Mandina River Lodge on the water. The daily activities open with Lectures on Gambian culture, customs and traditions. The special guest for the evening was the lovely Ms. Rita Marley & family, wife of the Legendary Reggae artist the late Bob Marley, who entertained us with Reggae music and dance. There were many historic sites to visit such as the Boat Cruise to Fort James Island, the site were Kunta Kinteh and many other slaves were brought and held until they were taken to America. The home of Kunta Kinteh Juffureh was fascinating. We were able to see the place were Kunta Kinteh grew up as a young boy and we were also greeted by all the Elders of the Village. The best part of it all was meeting the Living Decedents of Kunta Kinteh. The Journey was remarkable! There are many historic sites to see, beautiful hotels, learning about the Culture values and traditions, dancing, the festive foods and most of all the people of Gambian, the Country that smiles. The trip to Africa is an experience of a lifetime...take the Journey and it will change your thinking process forever.
